Playa Junquillal Useful Numbers & Information:

1. Emergency Numbers:

To report an emergency call the Paraíso Police at 658-7063.

In case of a robbery or an assault you can call the Paraíso Police at 658-7063. There are now four policemen and a motorcycle in Paraíso.  If nobody answers, call the Santa Cruz Police at 680-0136. In cases of emergencies, please call 911.  Initially, the police must respond, and then it is your obligation to make your denuncia (statement) with the police in Santa Cruz.  Filing a denuncia is very important for two reasons: First it helps the police find and then the courts prosecute the criminals. Documenting offences also illustrates the need for police presence.

When you are a witness to a crime, please call the police quickly, and provide them with as much information as you can: Explain what you saw happening, where, when, and give a description of the perpetrators, and their vehicle, if possible. If you don't speak Spanish, find a bilingual person to help you make the call to the police.   The faster the police have information, the more likely they will be able to apprehend the perpetrator.

The security committee has installed two suggestion boxes, one outside Loris' Super, and the other at Adriana's Hotel Junquillal. We will be putting updated information notices in the boxes approximately once a month. Please read, and let us know any suggestions you might have.

Remember Security in Junquillal involves everyone!

This is a private company with medically equipped airplanes and helicopters. They have been to Junquillal and have agreed that the cleared area adjacent to Hotel Junquillal and in front of Villa Serena is suitable for helicopter landing. The cost per flight is around $3400. If the injured person could go to Tamarindo or to another airfield where a small plane can land the cost would be $1600-$2500.

6. In the event of a death

Sorry to be morbid but in the event that it will help someone, I decided to include this section.

http://www.amcostarica.com/040207.htm

Apparently all bodies of foreign nationals are taken to the Morgue Judicial (located near the airport) in San Jose and an autopsy is performed. You have to go here to fill in the appropriate paperwork and then they will release the body to the funeral home. Be sure to bring ID for you and the deceased (it is helpful to have a document that shows your relationship to that person if you do not have the same last name). If you go to the funeral home first and make the necessary decisions, it will make the process more efficient.

Once the morgue releases the body, they will call the funeral home so that they can pick up the body. If you decide to cremate the body, it will be at least 24 hours before you can pick up the remains after the body is released to the funeral home.

The US embassy was very helpful in taking care of administrative paperwork, notification of social security, following up for the final autopsy, lots of copies of the foreign death certificate etc.... Be sure to bring ID for you and the deceased (it is helpful to have a document that shows your relationship to that person if you do not have the same last name). This made things much easier upon return to the US. For emergencies involving a US citizen call 519-2000 or after hours call 506-519-2280.

Funeral Homes in San Jose  http://www.amcostarica.com/110104.htm

JARDINES DEL RECUERDO (has cremation facilities – only one in Costa Rica) - they were good to deal with. They accept credit cards (VISA). The costs were very reasonable (much less than in the US). Their English was limited and it is not like dealing with a US funeral home but we were pleased with their services both times.
