I suggest getting at least the Moon guidebook (which contains maps & directions) and as many of the printed maps listed below as you can manage, if you intend on driving.  Getting a little lost is half the fun.  Bringing a compass is also recommended for both hiking and driving.  Additionally, check the WEB and Costa Rican local publications.  No one source of information seems 100% accurate or complete.  The maps are available in downtown San Jose, but buy them ahead if you can.

Frommer's(r) Costa Rica 2007

by Eliot Greenspan

This guide hits the high points of Costa Rica from another viewpoint for the non-budget traveler.  It is a good complement to Mr. Bakers book.  However, I suggest being skeptical of the ads inserted by the publisher.  The author does not have control of their content.

This is the guide to travel and retirement in Costa Rica that first sparked my interest in this country. For that, I am indebted to Mr. Howells.
